Mirror Gate, the second book in the Harbinger Series, continues the sagas of Cettie and Sera that were introduced in Storm Glass. If you have not yet read that book, go back and read it first. Then pick up this book and get ready for an adventure!I work at a university in the residence halls, and it was fun to see Cettie and Sera experience many of the same emotions and feelings that are common among students who go away from home to attend school. Their experiences, though mingled with magic and terrors that do not exist in our world, were relatable to experiences common to to those of us living outside the pages of a book. Jeff’s ability to connect us with his characters is masterfully done, and I often felt happy, sad, anxious, upset, and overwhelmed along with these two young women as they experience the challenges that life throws at them. For me, this book started out a little slower, but once it picked up, I could not put it down. Having read many of Jeff’s other series, it was fun to find connections to some of his other worlds, and to have my mind expand in that way. It was hard for me to gage how someone unfamiliar with some of his other worlds and magic systems, and political landscapes would understand all of the intricacies introduced into this series. I feel like the Harbinger series can stand on it’s own, but being familiar with the Muirwood and Kingfountain from Jeff’s other books adds depth and understanding to an already well written novel. The only real downside of reading this book when I did is that it will be a few months before I can continue the adventure—a real test of patience being left in the unknown. But, like most experiences in life often are while in the middle of them, Jeff leaves us hanging with high tensions, many unknowns, and yet an undergirding of hope of good things to come. I recommend this book, and eagerly anticipate the release of the next book in the series: Iron Garland.Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
Like the last book, I felt this one ended too soon, and wish we might have let Cettie and Adam have a dance before we go.... but cliffhangers do that, and we can expect most second-in-the-series to be a bit more grim than the first, as this one was. The villains get meaner, the lovers break up or get separated, and the twisted knots in Book One become tangled. But I hesitate to give Wheeler's writing here less than five stars, because the connection made with Kingfountain, which I feared might be reaching a bit, or come off as contrived, was masterfully done, although I hope one does not have to have read that series to appreciate the effect. What I always love best about Wheeler's work, though, is the appeal of his characters. No wooden stereotypes here, they are fully human with all the flaws and idiosyncrasies we would expect from real people. Even the villains are given a touch of two of humanity; a reason, if not an excuse, for the harm that they do. And the friendships that develop, especially between Cettie And Sera, develop for the betterment of the friends and of their world. That said, I have just enough time to re-read Mirror Gate before the next book is delivered. Thank you, Mr. Wheeler. Please keep writing, and if I could wish for one thing in your world, it would be a bit more time with the main characters.
As is often the case, the second book was not quite as good as the first for me, but it was still a good read. I missed the character development that was so interesting, intriguing, and understandably so necessary in book 1. Although not a central component of the book, I like the bits and pieces of wisdom that can be applied to real life. Mirror Gate opens several years later and could be read as a stand alone book, although I do not recommend it. Without the background that comes with book 1, book 2 is lacking some of the depth. i have never read a book that makes me want to keep talking to the characters, offering words of encouragement or shouting “NO! Don’t do it!†I did not like the ending at all! Whoever does when it requires reading the next book immediately (which is exactly what I intend to do).
I love getting back into Sera and Cettie’s lives. I gave it four stars because it’s slower and lacks the suspense of the first book. But the exposition is necessary to the plot. I’m fascinated by the changes in the religion over time. The basics are there but the rituals have modified, as they do IRL. But politics remain the same, somehow. People are people, no matter what century. Plan your time to start this book. You won’t be able to put it down.
Rarely can an author captivate equally through a series of books. Somewhere in the middle of the end they usually start to slide. In other books I would find myself glossing over descriptions because I was getting bored/or anxious to "get on with it". Not here, not for a moment... Mr. Wheeler keeps you turning pages to the very ending. You think you "might" know what will happen next, but as with every well-written mystery (make no mistake, this is fictional, but it is greatly intertwined with mystery) you are usually wrong and the writer turns you in a direction you did not see coming! As is the case with most of my reviews, I do not like to tell you the story, you must read it for yourself as Jeff Wheeler is a far better storyteller than I could ever hope to be! If you enjoy fictional mystery, I highly recommend this book.
