I read this on Kindle Unlimited for free, but after I read it, I bought it. I liked it that much. I've been on and off fooling around with meditation for 20 years, I've read a lot, and I've tried a lot. Many books that I've read go from page 1 to page whatever, and I don't find anything new, but this little gem bestowed two pearls within the first ten pages. And there are more. Maybe it's the Joe Six-pack style, although I doubt the author is one of those guys, but things I have known for years have suddenly been made clear. It only took a little over an hour to read this, and it was worth it.
I started meditating recently and I have read a few really thick books on what it is and how to do it. This book was much more practical for me and would be much easier for a beginner to follow. It was well written and easy to understand. Just the basics of what happens when you meditate and how to do it the simplest way. No weird positions, no chanting, no staring at your belly button. Just the simple and basic understanding and methods of sitting still and not thinking about anything specific. I really responded to the idea of the space between thoughts. That seems to be the concept that I was missing.I really liked the book and I will keep it as a reminder on getting back to the basics of meditation. I am sure I will read it several times in the coming years. I was fortunate enough to pick it up when it was offered for free but it's well work the few dollars that it costs now.If you read this one and want to know more about the how and why of meditation, you will either have to spend a few bucks or get something from the public library. I recommend the library because it's free but that in now way should detract from the quality of this book
The book is a quick read and provides a brief guide to meditation and how you can incorporate meditation into your life without feeling like one of those creeps with dreadlocks who sits around the park not wearing shoes. The instructions are easy to follow and there are also pictures which I found to be useful to practice the various techniques. The personal stories in the book add a touch that most people will be able to relate to in way or another. Some parts of the book did feel a bit out of place, such as a list of celebrities who practice meditation, and there are other parts that you might catch yourself skimming. That being said, other parts of the book you are likely to bookmark and come back as you begin the meditate.Overall, the book is great if you are curious about meditation but don't want to jump into the deep end of craziness it can bring. It is easy to read and is perfect for an airplane trip or lazy afternoon since it isn't too heavy or complex. And if you want to follow through and practice, it's also written in such way that makes it possible to find the info you're looking for without any fuss.
True to its cover, a very easy to understand guide that takes out all the" fluff and religious stuff". I read it slowly over several weeks, taking my time to explore each idea. After the first week I was already feeling calmer and relaxed.
If you're an average guy or gal who was curious about meditation, then this book provides a solid introduction to the concept and a great start to the practice. Its unpretentious writing style and relatable anecdotes also helps to put you in a calm state while reading, and repeat readings can help you get back into that mindset, particularly if you've slacked off for a few months in setting aside meditation time.
I did not think that a meditation book could be both fun and informational. I also didn’t think that meditation was so simple. The author explains how to meditate in a very simple way and includes lots of pictures to help walk me through it. This is a very practical guide. I am sure I will come back to this again as I try to start my own meditation practice.
I’ve considered giving meditation a shot for quite some time but have always shoved it to the back burner thinking it's just too religious for me. I like how the author immediately dispels the notion that meditation has anything to do with religion. Hearing how this "Ordinary Dude" started practicing meditation and how it has helped him is truly inspirational. The book is a very approachable length and is written in clear conversational language explaining the benefits of meditation and everything you need to get started. Calming the mind and easing the constant churn of thoughts is what I hope to gain from meditation and this book has really inspired me to give it a go.
Good book. As a Buddhist I have meditated on and off my entire life. This is a bit different than what I've done but I still find it is effective. The author seems to have a deep understanding of meditation that I can relate to and he has experimented with many different types of meditation. He knows his stuff, and I like how he clearly explains the benefits of meditation. Makes me interested in starting up a everyday practice again. Also, as someone who occassionaly enjoys a beer or two. I am happy to see a meditation teacher say it is okay to enjoy alcohol. Buddhism teaches moderation and I gather that this author understands that. Just because you enjoy alcohol (moderately) doesn't mean you can't be a dedicated meditator. This author is the living embodiment of that belief.
