Israeli author Gavron offers an unusual perspective on Palestinian suicide bombings in this offbeat, often satirical political thriller. While riding a bus one morning, Eitan Croc Einoch, who works for a Tel Aviv consulting company that helps clients save money by teaching them ways to shave seconds off customer-service calls, tries to reassure fellow passengers that a suspicious-looking man isn't a terrorist. Gavron helps us see both sides of the second intifada in Israel. By alternatively perspectives between a 30-something Israeli yuppy and a young Palestinian reluctant terrorist, Gavron gives us both a fast paced story and a thought provoking portrait of a country that has suffered more than its fair share of tragedy. He puts a human face on both sides of the conflict and he also tells a compelling story.
Excellent exploration from two polar opposite views and successfully explores both Israeli and Palestinian experiences of violence in the Mid-East.
I UNDERSTAND THIS NOVEL WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN IN HEBREW THEN TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH. MAYBE THAT IS WHY IT READS SO UNEVENLY. I FOUND MYSELF BACKTRACKING TOO MANY TIMES AS SOME PARAGRAPHS FAILED TO MAKE SENSE .TO REPHRASE A PARAGRAPH FROM THE BOOK, WITH MY ADDITION IN PARENTHESES "I (THINK I) REMEMBER THE CONVERSATION. HARD TO PICK IT FROM THE REST. THERE WERE SO MANY CONVERSATIONS IT NOW SEEMS LIKE ONE LONG HALLUCINATION, LIKE ONE ENDLESS RED FOG." THE PLOT LINE IS FASCINATING WITH INSIGHTS INTO BOTH SIDES OF A CONFLICT THAT HAS THUS FAR DEFIED A PEACEFUL SOLUTION. TOO BAD IT IS SO DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW.
A friend had recommended this book and I'm glad I bought it. Very unusual and thought provoking.
While I have to give Gavron credit for taking on the frightful task of writing a novel about the suicide bombings of the second intifada (and one which incorporates both Israeli and Palestinian voices), I was kind of underwhelmed for most of this. He's obviously trying to depict an awful period without resorting to cheap political stances, but he ends up with narration that seems so listless, so hopelessly casual most of the time, that this reads more like an early draft of a better book that just never got written.The characterizations are weak and the development of them and the plot are a haphazard mess. He introduces far too many characters who revolve around Eitan and Fahmi's perspectives without having any sort of effect or real relevance within their points of view.In spite of that, Gavron does do an excellent job at hinting at a few things; the sheer mental exhaustion from fear that everyone in this society faced at this time, the ambiguity of being a first generation Israeli, of being rooted in places like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem without being truly 'rooted' there, and of the passive misery which the IDF can inflict without firing a single rubber bullet, but simply by disrupting the basic, meager infrastructure which Palestinians live under, and of the casual racism/anti-semitism that have sadly become common currency on both sides of an intractable divide.This might just be kind of an impossible topic to really write a solid novel about. Suicide bombings are already fraught with misery and hyperbolic emotions on so many levels, both direct and implicit, that trying to turn them into the centerpiece for literary fiction seems like a really dicey prospect, especially when the characters and plot are already on shaky territory to begin with.
This was a 2-sitting read. Just could not put it down. There are two primary actors in this Israeli-Palestinian comedy/drama/war story. Croc is Israeli and survives three suicide bombings. Fahmi is a Palestinian bomber who survives his own attempted martyrdom, most of the book in a coma. The chapters alternate: Croc and his life, his loves, his job, his remembrances of his military duty. He becomes a national hero. Fahmi in his coma-state, inside his head, relives his life, the intifada, what it's like to be occupied, the humiliations, the suffering. The history of his family going back to 1948, and what life was like before 1948. The Israelis hate the Palestinians, the Palestinians hate the Israelis. In Gavron's story, nothing is sacred and all participants are torn to shreds.I'm going to quote Geraldine Brooks from the front cover: Assaf Gavron has done the impossible: written a darkly funny novel about suicide bombing. In a dazzling display of empathy, Gavron creates two equally compelling narrators......This is a virtuoso work: a pitch-perfect rendering of real Israeli life in all its chaos, energy, humor and terror. ..." And there's a good blurb on the back by Etgar Keret who is no slouch when it comes to darkly humorous fiction.I won't spoil the end. I wanted to speed-read the last 50 pages because I could hardly wait to know what happened! Wow, this was really a thrilling literary experience.
