Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins reunite to undertake the Jesus Chronicles, a four-book series of historical novels profiling the lives of the Gospel writers: John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke. This first installment recounts the personal and spiritual journey of the only one of the original apostles who died from old age rather than martyrdom. Robinson Dean brings an appropriately deep and sober tone to his duties as narrator, especially in his portrayal of the elderly John's exhaustive efforts to leave a written record of both his first-person experiences and prophetic visions. The authors steep their storytelling in a conservative interpretation of scripture that may not appeal evenly across the broader spectrums of Christian theology, but they provide some engaging human drama. This first book in the series blends large excerpts from the Bible with fictional retelling of the historical setting in an attempt at bringing the book of Revelation of St. John the Divine to life. The fictional portions of the book are moderately interesting, but contained little this review didn't already know. As for the book of Revelation itself, there's very little exposition of the content. I had hoped for more from this book.
I read the Left Behind series, so I was expecting a true to the Scriptures book. I was not disappointed. While we can't know everything of John the Beloved, Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins do a very good job in presenting a story that will open your own imaginings when thinking of the times John lived in, how he would have conducted himself in and through his love for our LORD, Jesus. I was especially surprised and grateful for their forethought in including John's Gospel at the end of the book. It supported their thoughts on John's life, as they wrote about it; while giving the reader (me) the Truth of his Gospel account.I love God's Word more than anything; I love The Gospel. Even though John's Story is a fictional account, it is inspired by the authors love of Jesus and The Truth (it shows). It has helped to give me a little more depth into the character of John the Beloved in my own musings of those times. Thank you, Tim and Jerry, for loving our LORD.(I have just began Mark's Story and look forward to Luke's and Matthew's)
My favorite, I think, of the Gospel writers. John was the youngest of the disciples and died as the oldest. He saw everything from the beginning of Christ's ministry until his own death. He becomes alive, strong, and endearing in the story. I can even picture him on the isle of Patmos in the cave writing down what he saw and was told when he was taken to heaven. Great story.
To put it bluntly, I am amongst the poorest readers of books. I just do not have time to sit down and read a book. (I bought The Elephant Whisperer a long time ago and still have not read it). Too many activities in my life; D.I.Y. projects through out winter and outdoor activities all summer long. However, I listened to a book review on PBS radio about John's Story, The Last Eyewitness and was intrigued. I read it like enjoying a great buffet meal and didn't want to get up and leave the table. Since, I have purchased this book a few times as gifts for two ministers and other friends.
Fantastic book-if you open it up you will not be able to put it down!!! Seems like you are right there in the story!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!Be Blessed by it.
If you enjoy scripture and history you'll likely love this read. LaHaye and Jenkins have seemed done an excelent job in writting about the historical Gospel of John. This is one of 4 in a series entitled The Jesus Chronicles in which the authors put the lives and writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John into a "fictional" but "historical setting and what might have been going on in their thoughts and lives as they wrote their respective books of the Bible.I use "likely" and "seem" because there is much about the historical and theological settings that I don't know, and some reviewers have given John's Story, or I should say, the authors' writing of it, some very critical reviews. Yet, I notice that these reviewers invariably give very favorable reviews to what I believe some very far-fetched fiction. From my limited experience LaHaye and Jenkins don't do anything to wrongly depict scripture and known historical facts and the books reads well.I think it is important to consider the Biblical writers circumstances and the hisorical backdrop of the times.Great Read, though this reveiw might be a bit wishy-washy! But it's worth you reading and deciding for yourself. Undoubtedly, 999 or 1,000 people will walk away with more real knowledge and insight into the Gospels, scripure in general, and Jesus than they have now.To that end....Read Well.
I read the bible every day but I have never experienced it like this literary conception brings it to you, this book puts you right there beside John and the story of the disciple of Christ. It takes you through his trials and what he was thinking, giving you a whole new texture and viewpoint of this beautiful book of the Bible, I would highly recommend this to the seasoned and well as the new follower of Christ.
I read this book several years ago and think of it frequently. Finally decided to buy it so I could read it again and share it with my son. He’s loving it.
