New Jersey mobsters Tommy and Joe Rina kill the star witness in the state's case against them, and "King Con" Beano X. Bates plots revenge in the form of an elaborate "sting." Aiding him is former New Jersey prosecutor Victoria Hart, prim, upstanding, and dedicated, who's drawn into the sting unwillingly, then takes glee in committing felonies and telling lies right and left. Screen- and TV writer Cannell's second novel (following Final Victim, LJ 4/15/96) is pure delight; its well-developed plot line has nice detours here and there so the reader cannot quite foresee the conclusion. The entire Bates family, criminals all, are wonderful characters, and although some of the action is far-fetched and the sting dialog gets boring in its technicality, the wry humor will keep readers enthralled. Great summer reading for all libraries. (Cannell is making this into an MGM movie with John Travolta as Beano..-?Alice DiNizo, Raritan P.L., N.J.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This is the book that got my son reading. I couldn't get him to read books. While we were on vacation, I had read this book and loved it.I challenged him to read only 50 pages, and if he didn't like it - he could put it down, and I wouldn't bother him the rest of the vacation.Fortunately this books takes off with a vengeance about page 20, and then it becomes a page turner.After an hour - my son told me that I cheated. I don't care - he's been a book reader ever since.
This is one of Cannell's earlier works, and, in my opinion, one of his best.It took me awhile to read it because the plot, which is basically about getting revenge, is complex. I don't know if Cannell thought all this up, or he got the ideas from real con men, but the characters come up with the mother of all cons! As my title says, it's "The Sting" on steroids, and was so complex that it made my head hurt. Never in a million years could I have thought up something like this.I enjoyed reading it, but it made me sad to think that we won't be seeing any more new novels from Cannell, may he rest in peace.

An exceptional, page turning fun romp. It had me rooting for the rogues.
If you enjoy stories about gambling this one is the best! I was sure it would be made into a movie and have been disappointed that it wasn't. Maybe there are just too many incredible characters no one could do justice to the story.
Mr. Cannell manages an elegant blend of action, suspense, humor and romance with a deep dose of informed gambling/casino atmospherics. This is a wonderful, fun read if one has any interest at all in well-balanced crime fiction that is both intense and nuanced.
This a story of the Bates family who are of a family of con artists. They get involved with the pulling a major con on the Rina brothers who are big time gangsters. Stephen Cannell did an excellant job with this book. The con was so elborate and believable. There was never a dull moment.
