At first I was not sure what to expect. Was it another white author trying to show us the plight of a young Afrikan boy growing up in New York City. I really just went off of the other reviews and from what I researched people gave great respect to Mr. Butterfield's work. The minute I opened the book I was immediately enthralled with the wicked history of Edgefield South Carolina and how it would use and murder Afrikans like cattle being led to the slaughter. I also liked how the author broke down the psychological damage not only inflicted on this family but ALL families affected by slavery in the United States. Such a taboo topic to mention even today, but a necessary evil to heal the trauma of this country. I read this book a few times and have even ordered copies for friends. The Willie Bosket story is one that reflects an American tragedy that is not so in the past!

An excellently written and researched work by a prize winning New York Times reporter. Through its' multi-century history of the Bosket family, this book traces the history of violence in the Black community, back to its' White slave owner origins of chains, whips, beatings, rape and physical mistreatment on the slave plantations of the the old south. A must-read for anyone wanting to understand the culture of inner city violence.

This book although a sometimes very sad story, is well written and historically accurate book. You truly get to see the other side of the story and can understand the birth of generational violence in the South.

Important and informative book about our prison system

This book was purchased for a social deviance class that I took last semester. It was a very good book that has an incredible history of America's most hardened criminal in the Bosket family. It's a very good read and you cannot put the book down.

There is American history: rich, white slave-owners who created America and took it to where it is today. This also falls under traditional concepts like how a bill is made, pledge of allegiance, and etc. Then there is the "other" history of the lower classes in America and how they have fared. And there is this book, about the African-American history of America, and Butterfield makes a clear line from the beginning of the brutality of slavery and its impact on the present African-American community.A great book, for sociologists, historians and educators. I especially believe for educators because many times the main character - who is very intelligent - could have been reached had he the right opportunities...

Heartbreaking book!

you would not believe how people are pushed through the system and how it affects the children if you are present in there life or not a very good book to read
