In Saving Washington, Chris Formant paints a picture of life in the American colonies at a pivotal point in the Revolutionary War, following the amazing story of the 1st Maryland Regiment from conception though the Battle of Brooklyn in a way that so wonderfully expresses the raw emotion of the moment. The book brings to life a number of historical figures in an accessible way . It reads like a movie at times, which arguably might be the only way to tell a story as heroic as that of the Maryland 400. Certainly I'm not the first person who has spent most of their lives living in Maryland and New York without much knowledge of the 1st Maryland Regiment's role in the Battle of Brooklyn, and as any good work of historical fiction should, Saving Washington leaves me eager to delve deeper.

Saving Washington is a fascinating well told story. My interest in this particular historical moment was piqued by the idea of the story being told through the eyes of two young friends who joined the fight. I enjoyed the fast pace of the plot and all the twists and turns. I was definitely hooked, after a few chapters. The historical insights and descriptions were lovely. I would recommend Saving Washington to adults as well as young adult readers. The author, Chris Formant has uncovered a gem of a story that needed to be told.

I loved the book! This is a griping story of bravery and heroism that young men felt and acted upon to fight for liberty in our countries earliest struggles for self governing. Chis does and outstanding job of character development, drawing compelling emotional perspectives both for and against the spark of revolution. I found the book hard to put down as the story and plot added a realistic human element to a little known, but critical battle for freedom. Historical fiction at its finest!

Chris Formant brings the story of the Maryland 400 to life with great effect.

Saving Washington by Chris Formant was a fascinating read. Until I read this fictional account,.I was not aware of the Maryland 400 or of the pivitol role the Battle of Brooklyn played in the Revolutionary War. Josh and Ben, the protagonists, are fictional characters but others characters in the book were real people. The locations and battle scenes were real. The book begins in Baltimore as revolutionary sentiments are filtering down from New England. Loyalties are divided among Maryland's population. Josh and Ben, life-long friends, are young men in their late teens. They are working on the docks associated with Josh's Dad's business. They see the impact Britain's increased taxation has on businesses. They experience the disdain many of the British soldiers and sailors have for the colonists. They hear the plea for young men to enlist in the militia to help protect their colony. After Josh's Dad is senselessly killed, both young men enlist. They are soon called up to help the Continental Army and to be part of a special unit to disrupt the British military. Running in the background is a British spy network that seeks to take down Washington and his army. This was a great read that brings to life relatively unknown heroes. I highly recommend it.

A fast paced and important read for young men and women about immense courage and resolve of the Maryland 400. They intuitively accomplished the unimaginable through sheer intention...there was no turning back. They stood their ground in faith and a vision for their country. I am fascinated how these brave men accomplished what they did and just kept reading and reading to discover a tipping point in the course of American history. Learning about history is so much better in story form because we can remember more by recognizing somewhat familiar characters. We can laugh, and cry, and cheer our favorite characters and or real people onward. This book is an opportunity to go back in time visually and only imagine what it must have been like. People to this day around the world are still taking a stand for what they value and need in their lives. Today we can see instantly on our hand held devices a world unfolding and luckily download a story like this to read just about anywhere. What I hear the author saying through his words is this- the best is yet to be as long as humans strive to make this a better world in which we live in. A clever and masterful historical fiction steeped in real time language we can all understand and reflect on.

I love history but especially the stories and details that you never learned about in any textbook. I enjoy the stories of the ordinary people who did extraordinary things that forever altered our history. This is one of those stories. The two main characters, Josh and Ben, may be historical fiction but the story still tells of a group of real men and their heroic action that greatly affected the American Revolution. “On a marshy Brooklyn battlefield on August 27, 1776, four hundred men from Baltimore, Maryland assembled to do battle against a vastly superior British army. Seemingly overnight, these young soldiers had matured from naïve teenagers to perhaps the most important, yet most forgotten, citizen soldiers in all of American history: “America’s 400 Spartans.” I felt that occasionally the book felt geared towards YA (which is not meant as an insult) even though it is not marketed that way. I did enjoy the friendship between Josh and Ben and although I feel it is probably unrealistic it did lend an extra depth to the story. Saving Washington is a very interesting story of bravery, justice and equality that will leave you wanting to learn more about this battle and the amazing story of these men.
