Wow, I just realized that I have had this book full a full year without reading it. I pre-ordered it but just kept putting it off. In the past, I would read a Joanna Wylde book the day it came out but slowly over time I liked the books less and less. I was worried because of a scene I read in Puck and Becca's book featuring Mel and Painter. Becca witnesses a fight between Painter and Mel in a bar and I just did not enjoy reading it. Turns out that fight forms the prologue of this book but from Painter's point of view. I recommend skipping the prologue and only reading it at the end. It just ruins things a bit.I really enjoyed this book more than I feared. Probably would have completely loved it except that I do not like long (years) of separation between the characters. I understand Mel had trouble forgiving and trusting Painter (not from cheating) but I was past ready for them to make up. Ruined it for me a bit. On the whole though I liked this book more than any since Hunter and Em's story. Books 1-3 super fantastic but book 4 and then Silver Bastard not so much. This book was somewhere in between the great group and the mediocre group.
4 stars for book five in the Reaper's MC series that features Levi "Painter" Brooks and Melanie Tucker. We have met these two characters in past books with Mel portrayed as the innocent little sweetheart that London takes under her wing and Painter as the jerky prospect that was stringing Em along before she finally quit him and hooked up with her hubby Liam. At the end of the last book Painter ended up going to jail for the MC after helping during Picnic's fiasco and he and Mel were just friends. Yet somehow these friendships always have a way of changing.Melanie Tucker is young and naive when she firsts meets Painter at a clubhouse party with her wild child best friend Jessica. She is instantly smitten with the man but he denies any attempts she throws at him before he ends up going to prison for a year. Mel decides to write Painter letters and they keep up this communication the whole time he is incarcerated but the minute he gets out he avoids her like the plague. Mel can't understand what she did to upset him and decides to confront him for ignoring her since he has been home from California.Painter has wanted Melanie since the first time he saw her at the clubhouse over a year ago but the MC president's then girlfriend asked him to back off. Painter doesn't know how much longer he can resist Mel especially since she thinks he doesn't want her. Then like divine intervention due to a technicality Painter is free to pursue Melanie and after much deliberation and hiding on his behalf he gives in to what he has wanted all along and claims Mel.Painter and Melanie don't have much time together before circumstances come between them that set them both on different paths again in their lives. This time around the consequences being so severe and far reaching Painter doesn't know if he will ever be able to right the wrongs that were done and make Mel believe she is truly the one for him.This book was not the usual Reaper's book for me where we had a good view of club life and inner workings of the dynamics in the MC. Painter and Mel's situation was unique to say the least but I missed the MC. When I started this book Painter was not my favorite character and now he is in the top three but Melanie who I liked at first was a bit much for me to stomach with her constant back and forth, so I guess it's true never make assumptions. Bring on Gage, please Joanna Wylde! I need Gage stat :)
I loved this book and this series. Levi “Painter†Brooks was nothing before he joined the Reapers motorcycle club. He was in the foster care system as a kid and juvie as a teen and prison when he met one of the Reaper's Bolt. The day he patched in, they became his brothers and his life. All they asked in return was a strong arm and unconditional loyalty—a loyalty that’s tested when he’s caught and sentenced to prison for a crime committed on their behalf. Melanie Tucker has a had a hard life where she thought that her mother up and left when she was in her teens. Her best friend Jessica who is London's niece has always been their for her and London took care of her when she could no longer deal with her father. Melanie has had a crush on Painter after he took care of her when London's house blow up after Jessica ran away and before Painter and Puck went to prison for a year Melanie kept his car and wrote to him. When Painter and Puck got out of prison he tried to stay away from Mellie but it didn't work they tried to be friends that turned into friends with benefits. Most of the book Painter was an a*shole I think he did it in the beginning to push her away. When Mellie becomes pregnant Painter doesn't take the news well he never wanted to be a father she gets upset and leaves he goes on a run with the club and gets arrested leaving Melanie on her own with a baby on the way. Melanie is really upset with Painter for leaving her for putting the club before her and the baby. Melanie had a girl and when Painter got out he changed he realized that he had a lot more to lose although Melanie wouldn't give him the time of day she also changed her life she went to nursing school and became in E.R. nurse. Melanie was still in love with Painter and she wanted to be with him but he couldn't trust him to put his family first. Painter was done playing games he wanted his family back he wanted Melanie. This was a really good book the Hayes sister's are something else Kit was always in Mellie's business causing trouble for everyone and Jessica was also sticking her nose in Mel and Painter's life and she was the who was irresponsible one of the two. This book was well written like the rest of the books in this series with no errors in spelling or grammar. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series Gage and Tinker
