Review
Bursting with glossy stills and archival material, film historian and photographer Mark A. Vieira's Into The Dark: The Hidden World of Film Noir, 1941-1950 offers an unprecedented portal into Hollywood's golden era of cynicism. A systematic study of noir, this gorgeous coffee table tome fills a significant gap in scholarship on the genre.”--MovieMaker

Awesome book, documenting the most prominent films in the genre of film noir from 1941 - 1950. Sturdy hardcover filled with great glossy photos and blurbs from theater owners, critics, and the artists. Really a coffee table companion for watching or investigating noir films, the book isn't really a "reader," per say. However, it is nonetheless and absolutely, one of the coolest books on the subject of film noir that has ever been printed. The only minor issue is the aforementioned stopping point: 1950. They left out many very, very important films such as Kubrick's The Killing, The Big Combo, Welles' Touch of Evil, etc. Will there be a sequel ? Because there definitely should be. WE DEMAND "INTO THE DARK: PART 2!"
I'm a huge movie fan. I bought this book hoping for a good analysis of some of the best Noir films of the 1940's. In that regard it disappointed. It has many good quality photo stills and publicity shots of numerous pictures, however there is little or no plot description or critical review of the movies themselves. I wouldn't buy it again had I had the opportunity to take a quick look at it in a bookstore. I will highly recommend a different book however to movie fans. The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies. Five stars for that one.
A very beautiful book that provides a glimpse into the film noir genre. However, my purchase was aimed at a more in-depth look. Each film addressed presents, photos, theater owner and production staff comments, and some critic's reviews.. While interesting, it was disappointing since I was looking for more insight into the films themselves. That said, I was introduced to films of the genre that were unknown and that I can pursue. But the content wasn't what was hoped for. The rating indicates a measure of satisfaction, but alas, it is a coffee table book and I have no coffee table on which to display it...
I didn't read the description well enough. It's all photos, and ones my noir-addicted husband doesn't find compelling.
Great book about film noir. Made me aware of the history behind works I was already familiar with. Exposed me to films I didn't realize were noir, so now look for.
Excellent photos. Great comments from theater owners as well as movie critics. Definitely worth it. Would love to see another covering next decade.
Into the Dark provides excellent photographs of my beloved Film Noir movies. The movie card comments are a unique way to express the reactions of each film's audience at the time they were first shown. I would have preferred more analysis and expressions of the historic significance of the films because the movie cards are not compelling and do not convey the timelessness of these treasures. Into the Dark is a very good publication that could be a little bit better.
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK A MUST HAVE FOR NOIR LOVERS.........NICE PRICE....GREAT PHOTOS AND BACKSTORYS!!!
