This anthology contains four stories set in the Black Jewels universe.Weaver of Dreams tells how spiders learned from a dying dragon how to weave webs that can hold or create lives. The Prince of Ebon Rih takes place after the events of Heir to the Shadows and tells the story of Lucivar's courtship of Marian.Zuulaman tells a story from Saetan's past when he was married to Hekatah and the Warlord Prince of Dhemlan. A country called Zuulaman tries to get the best of his country, aided by the 100 families of Hyall and Hekatah, and Saetan shows them just what a black-jeweled warlord prince can do.Kaeleer's Heart tells what happens after the events of Queen of the Darkness when Jaenelle heals quite changed and Daemon wonders if she doesn't love him anymore. Their relationship is complicated by someone who wants to ruin Daemon's reputation and wreck his relationship with Jaenelle so that he will turn to her. He shows everyone why he was nicknamed the Sadist while he was a pleasure slave in Terreille. All of these stories were great at providing more about the fascinating Black Jewels world. The Prince of Ebon Rih and Kaeleer's Heart were also wonderful romances.
I loved the Black Jewels Trilogy - let me be clear. I've worn out 2 trade paperbacks of the set and still keep reading them. When I found out the series continued, I was a little skeptical. This 4 piece story simply was icing on the cake of one of my favorite stories. I often wondered what happened to my favorite characters after the stories were over; what had happened to cause hilarious other scenarios, or other obscure references. This set of stories explains Lucivar and his wife and how they met, the story of Saetan's second son ( and his third) and what the first actions were that soured Saetan's relationship. Finally, it tells the story of Jaenelle and Daemon and what happened after she came out of the Cave of Dreams. This had definitely been added to my "keep reading it into the ground" list. (Or at least until my kindle dies)
This book is made up of four stories that happened during or before the Black Jewels trilogy. The first story is about the dragons and the golden spiders before the Blood received their jewels (10 pages). The second story is about how Lucivar and Marian met, fell in love, and eventually married (218 pages). The third story is about Saetan's past and the beginning of the first war (44 pages). The fourth story is after "Queen of the Darkness" and focuses on Daemon and Jaenelle (166 pages). With all four stories you get a nice sized book.Personally, I could do without the first story. It has little relevance to the trilogy and is not long enough for you to care what happens to the characters. The second and the fourth stories are by far the best. You are reading about developed characters and you tend to have a vested interest in what happens in the stories. The third story about Saetan is referenced in both in the second and fourth stories. As a stand alone story it is ok. It is a short memory that explains certain aspects of Saetan's behavior. Being referenced by the other two stories, makes this a more valuable story.Overall, I would say that three out of the four stories are good, two of those three are spectacular. It is a must buy if you want to know what happens after the trilogy.
I was worried about this book--how could you have a sequel to the Black Jewels Trilogy without it diminishing the story? Most sequels are a disappointment. Not "Kaeleer's Heart". It wrapped up some questions left over from the Black Jewels in a very satisfying way. The trilogy wouldn't have been as powerful if this story had been included; reading it later as a separate story gave closure without spoiling the rhythm of the original series. The other stories in the book were also very enjoyable, and it was a pleasure to visit the characters again. On the negative side, the writing didn't seem to be quite as flowing and elegant as that in the original series. Readers should read the original trilogy before reading these short stories in order to get to know the characters and to get a full appreciation for Anne Bishop's talent. The only other negative impression I had about the book was that some of the character's behaviors and speaking styles didn't seem to mesh completely with the original series. Not a surprise, really, given the years that have passed since the publication of the last of the Black Jewels trilogy. None of these issues were enough of a detriment to keep this book from being one I'll read again--Anne Bishop is one of the great fantasy writers.
Anne Bishop is marvelous. She weaves a world of magic that seems so real I feel as if I know these people. The storylines are creative, fascinating, thrilling.
If you haven't read the two books before this one you should. This series is amazing but very dark. So many bad things happen within the first two books and by the time you get to this third book you are so happy that nice things start happening but that hope is being pulled down more and more by the fact that the two main bad guys aren't gone yet and it isn't a real happily ever after. I have read this series over three times now and each time I still fall in love with all of the characters and happenings that go on.
This book fills in and explains episodes in previous books. If you haven't read those, it might seem disjointed. The characters have the worries and insecurities that soften and make them like able despite the violence and sex.
I enjoyed this book so much. The stories answer questions about characters in her other stories , or they build the characters more. I have been hooked on Ms. Bishop's The Black jewel Series Since reading the first book Daughter of the Blood.. The world she has created in these books is fantastic. Some of the things that occur will shock ,arouse , ,make you cry, laugh and experience every possible emotion while reading her books; however, you will never be bored,
